The classic comfort dish Old Fashioned Homemade Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy is wonderful. This is a quick and easy dinner that the whole family will enjoy, cooked from scratch like grandma would.
Ingredients:
1 pound beef mince
a third of a cup of bread crumbs
ketchup, 2 tblsp.
mustard (1 teaspoon)
1 teaspoon sauce de Worcester
a quarter teaspoon of garlic powder
12 teaspoon onion powder – optional; use if gravy isn’t made with onions.
Gravy
1 tiny onion
1 tablespoon of oil
4 teaspoons flour 2 cups beef broth
ketchup, 1 tblsp
½ TBS WORCESTERSHIRE SEASONING
½ cup mushrooms, sliced – season to taste with salt and pepper
Instructions:
Start by thinly slicing a small onion if you want caramelized onions in your gravy. Cook over medium-high heat with 1 teaspoon oil until beautifully browned. Approximately 7-8 minutes. The optional mushrooms can be cooked instead of or in addition to the onions. Place in a dish and set aside.
1 pound ground beef, ⅓ cup breadcrumbs, 2 tablespoons ketchup, 1 teaspoon mustard and Worcestershire sauce, and ½ teaspoon garlic powder in a big mixing bowl If you’re not using onions, use ½ teaspoon onion powder instead.
Make 3-4 equal servings of the hamburger mixture. A quarter-size indent in the centre of one side to prevent the patties from blowing up and to ensure equal cooking.
Over medium-high heat, place steak patties in a large frying pan with a teaspoon of oil. Flip every 5-6 minutes till the interior temperature reaches 165 degrees. Approximately 15-20 minutes, depending on thickness, pan, and burners.
Combine 4 tablespoons flour and 1 cup beef broth in a mixing bowl. Place the Salisbury steak on a platter and tent it lightly. Most of the liquid should be poured off, leaving around 3-4 teaspoons. Allow the pan to cool for a few minutes. Over medium heat, bring 1 cup beef broth to a gentle boil.
While whisking, gradually add the flour-broth combination. ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce and 1 teaspoon ketchup Season to taste with salt and pepper.
Whisk for a few minutes, until the sauce has thickened well. If you’re using caramelized onions or mushrooms, stir them into the gravy thoroughly.
Return the steak to the pan and cook for a few minutes until everything is hot.
