Ingredients:

  • 4 large apples (Gala apples work well)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Vegetable oil for frying

For the Cinnamon Sugar Coating:

  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Instructions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, 2 tablespoons of sugar, salt, and 1/8 teaspoon of ground cinnamon. Set this dry mixture aside.
  2. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the beaten egg and buttermilk. This will be your wet mixture.
  3. In a third dish, create the cinnamon sugar coating by mixing together 1/3 cup of sugar and 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon. Set this mixture aside as well.
  4. Begin by slicing the apples into 1/4-inch thick slices. Then, use circular biscuit cutters in varying sizes to create rings from each apple slice, discarding the central core-containing circles.
  5. Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
  6. As the oil heats, combine the contents of the first (dry) and second (wet) dishes to create your batter.
  7. Dip each apple ring into the batter, allowing any excess to drip off by gently tapping the rings against the side of the bowl.
  8. Fry the apple rings in small batches, ensuring they brown evenly on both sides. Once they turn golden and crispy, transfer them to a plate lined with paper towels for a few seconds to remove excess oil.
  9. Quickly transfer each apple ring, one by one, into the cinnamon-sugar mixture, coating them evenly with the sweet and aromatic blend.
  10. Place the coated apple rings on a wire rack to cool slightly, and serve them while they are still warm.
