Instructions:

  1. Caramelize the Onions:
    • In a large skillet over medium to medium-low heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter.
    • Add the thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 25 minutes until they turn a deep brown color. Adjust heat as needed to prevent burning.
    • During the last 5 minutes of cooking, stir in the apple cider vinegar. Once done, remove the caramelized onions from the skillet.
  2. Prepare the Patties:
    • Divide the ground beef into two equal portions and shape them into thin 4-ounce patties, roughly matching the size of your bread slices.
    • Season each patty with salt and pepper.
    • Increase the skillet heat to medium-high and cook the patties for about 3 minutes on each side, ensuring they’re cooked through. Remove them from the skillet once done.
  3. Butter the Bread:
    • Wipe the skillet clean and melt the remaining tablespoon of butter.
    • Place all four bread slices in the skillet, ensuring one side of each slice is coated with butter. Remove two slices and set them aside.
  4. Assemble the Sandwiches:
    • On the two bread slices still in the skillet, layer each with a slice of Swiss cheese, a cooked patty, half of the caramelized onions, and another slice of Swiss cheese.
    • Place the reserved buttered bread slices on top of each sandwich, buttered side up.
  5. Cook the Sandwiches:
    • Over medium-low heat, cook the assembled sandwiches for 3 to 4 minutes on each side until the bread turns golden brown and the cheese melts to oozy perfection.
  6. Serve:
    • Slice the patty melts in half and serve immediately while warm. Optionally, serve with mustard on the side for dipping or spreading. Enjoy your delicious homemade patty melts!
