Ingredients:

For the Batter:

  • 113 grams unsalted butter (1/2 cup)
  • 300 grams granulated sugar (1 1/2 cups)
  • 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 240 grams all-purpose flour (2 cups)
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 240 milliliters milk (1 cup)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

For the Topping:

  • 400 grams granulated sugar (2 cups)
  • 50 grams unsweetened cocoa powder (1/2 cup)
  • 720 milliliters boiling water (3 cups)
  • Vanilla ice cream, for serving

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Place the butter in a 9×13-inch baking dish and put it in the oven. Once melted, remove it and set it aside.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups sugar, 4 tablespoons cocoa powder, flour, milk, baking powder, salt, and vanilla extract. Spoon this batter over the melted butter in the baking dish without stirring.
  4. In another bowl, mix together the 2 cups sugar and 1/2 cup cocoa powder for the topping. Sprinkle this mixture over the batter in the pan. Carefully pour the boiling water over the topping without stirring.
  5. Bake the dish for 35-40 minutes until the top sets. The bottom might remain a bit loose and gooey, which is normal.
  6. Allow the dessert to cool for about 15 minutes before serving. Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Enjoy your treat!
